GP's Warning: "If You Still Microwave a Wheat Bag for Cold, Stiff Knees, Read This Before Tonight"

35 fires. 17 people hurt. Bags measured at 57 to 70 °C straight out of the microwave. A GP explains the Hot–Cold Trap, and the cordless wrap his own mum swapped her wheat bag for.

I'm a GP, and there's one thing in Australian lounge rooms I'd quietly like to retire.

The wheat bag.

Not because warmth is wrong. Warmth on cold, stiff knees feels right, and it always has.

Because of three numbers.

57 to 70 °C. That's what researchers measured when they took wheat bags straight out of a microwave. Too hot to hold against your skin.

Ten minutes. That's roughly how long before the same bag is lukewarm and you're back on your feet.

35 and 17. That's how many wheat-bag fires and injuries Fire and Rescue NSW has recorded since 2011, most of them older Australians.

I call it the Hot–Cold Trap. Too hot, then too cold, then back to the microwave. Three trips a night, every night, all winter.

And here's what I want you to hear first: it's not your knees. It's the tool.

I know because I watched my own mum do it for years.

She'd stopped sitting through a whole show. She'd stopped getting down on the floor with the grandkids, because getting back up on cold, stiff knees wasn't worth it.

And if you're reading this with a bag of hot wheat balanced on your knee, or you've already been back to the microwave once tonight…

The next 5 minutes could change your evenings for good.

My name is Dr. Harrison Vance.

I'm a GP. Every winter, people sit down in my rooms and describe the same evening: the wheat bag, the microwave, the bag on the floor, the knees that never feel properly warm.

I'm about to explain why the thing in your cupboard keeps letting you down, and what my mum uses now.

If you only have a minute, here's the short version:

  1. The wheat bag starts too hot. A burns-unit study measured 57 to 70 °C straight out of the microwave.
  2. Then it goes cold. Even the makers say the useful warmth lasts 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. It only warms the top of your knee, and it slides off when you move.
  4. A cordless wrap fixes all three: warmth all the way round, held at the level you set.
  5. You can test it against your wheat bag for 7 nights, with 90 nights to decide.

TRY THIS TONIGHT: THE 10-MINUTE WHEAT BAG TEST

The 10-minute test: a wheat bag on a knee next to a kitchen timer

Before I tell you anything else, do this tonight. While you're watching the news.

It takes ten minutes and it'll tell you everything.

Heat your wheat bag the way you always do. Put it on your knee. Note the time.

Now answer this when the ten minutes are up:

Is the bag still properly warm, and still on your knee?

YES — it's still warm and still where I put it: You're one of the lucky ones. But check the temperature it started at. If it was too hot to hold at first, it's cooling faster than you think.

PARTIALLY — it's lukewarm, or it's slid halfway down: This is the classic wheat-bag pattern. Too hot, then too cool, then on the floor. You're not imagining it.

NO — it's cold, it's on the floor, or I've already been back to the microwave: This is most people. Your knee got a few minutes of warmth and an evening of fiddling.

I know because that was my mum, every single night.

What you'll read next is what finally changed it.

THE WARNING ON YOUR WHEAT BAG NOBODY READS

A wheat bag with a scorched corner just out of the microwave

Here's the part I only found out after Mum's third microwave trip one night.

Fire and Rescue NSW has been warning about wheat bags for years. Their count since 2011: 35 fires and 17 people hurt, most of them older Australians. One coroner's case involved a wheat bag left in a bed.

The reason is simple. Wheat dries out a little with every heating. A dry bag can overheat in the microwave, and once it's tucked under a blanket it can keep heating itself.

That's why the ACCC's advice is a glass of water next to the bag in the microwave, never covering it, and never sleeping with it.

And then there are the burns. NSW burns units have treated 27 people for heat packs since 2012, because a microwave has no idea what temperature the bag has reached. Neither do you, until it's on your skin.

Even the wheat-bag makers' own instructions say the useful warmth lasts 15 to 20 minutes, and that the bag keeps getting hotter for 3 to 5 minutes after it leaves the microwave. So it starts too hot and finishes too soon.

Nobody told Mum any of this. Her bag came with a tag she never read.

The warning label sewn into a wheat bag: do not overheat, do not cover, do not use in bed

I'm not here to tell you a wheat bag is evil. We used one for twenty years.

But it made me look at the problem differently. The bag doesn't just go cold too fast. It also starts too hot, and you're guessing every single time.

What I wanted for Mum was warmth you could set, not warmth you had to gamble on. A number on a screen, not a microwave timer.

That thought is where the Thermaya° Knee came from. Keep reading.

Sources: Fire and Rescue NSW, ACCC Product Safety, NSW burns units (via CHOICE), wheat-bag makers' care instructions, and “Burns From Hot Wheat Bags: A Public Safety Issue” (Eplasty, 2011).

So, point by point, here's what the Thermaya° Knee does about each one:

  • Overheating in the microwave → It never goes near one. A small 5-volt battery pack warms it, and the panel holds the level you set.
  • Starting too hot (wheat bags have been measured at 57–70 °C) → Five set heat levels on a touch panel. You pick the level, and it holds it.
  • Drying out and running hotter with age → There's no wheat in it. A heating panel sits inside the fabric, so night three hundred feels like night one.
  • Guessing the temperature → The level is on the screen. You can see it, and so can whoever is looking after Mum.
  • Prolonged contact on bare skin → First-aid guidance for any heat pack is 15 to 20 minutes with a layer between you and the warmth, and that's exactly how this is designed to be used: It's designed to be worn over your trousers, at a level you choose, for a 20-minute sit. Like anything that warms, use it as directed.

THE NIGHT MUM SAID “IT'S GONE COLD ANYWAY”

Reheating a wheat bag in the microwave at 9:47 pm

It was the middle of a Ballarat winter.

I was over at Mum's for dinner. The heater was on, the news was on, and the wheat bag was on her knee.

Then the weather came on, she shifted in her chair, and the bag slid straight onto the floor.

She sighed, picked it up, felt it, and said the words I'd heard a hundred times: "It's gone cold anyway."

Back to the microwave. Two minutes. Test it on the wrist. Too hot. Wait. Sit very, very still.

That was her whole evening. Not relaxing. Managing a bag of wheat.

And I just sat there.

Useless.

I'd tried everything I could think of.

Heat patches. Knee sleeves. A cheap heat wrap from the internet.

Nothing worked for more than a week or two.

The "solutions" weren't any better:

The heat patches? About A$3 to A$4 each, single use, and they peel off the moment you bend your knee.

The knee sleeve? Squeezed the knee, warmed nothing.

The cheap wrap? Lovely for three weeks. Then it stopped getting warm, right after the return window closed.

That night, something clicked.

I wasn't going to watch my mum spend another winter managing a bag of wheat.

So I did what any stubborn son with a medical degree would do…

I started reading. Hundreds of reviews. Forum posts. And one hospital study.

WHAT HUNDREDS OF REVIEWS AND ONE BURNS STUDY TOLD ME

A thermometer reading 34 on a wheat bag ten minutes after the microwave

For the next few months, I read everything I could find.

Reviews from Australia, the UK and Canada. Retiree forums. A 2011 burns-unit study, published in the journal Eplasty, where researchers measured wheat bags coming out of a microwave.

And what I found made me put down my own wheat bag for good.

The same three complaints came up again, and again, and again.

Here's what the heat-pack aisle doesn't tell you:

The wheat bag was never designed for a knee.

It's not about the warmth. Warmth on a cold, stiff joint feels right. That instinct hasn't changed in fifty years.

The problem is the way the warmth gets there.

Let me explain…

IT'S NOT YOUR KNEES. IT'S THE HOT–COLD TRAP

Wheat bag sits on top and slides off; the Thermaya° Knee wraps all the way around

Picture your knee like a fist.

It's round. It bends. It has a front, two sides and a back.

Now picture a wheat bag. Flat. Floppy. Heavy on one side.

When you rest it on your knee, it warms the top. The sides and the back get nothing. As one reviewer put it, the heat "is just lost".

That's problem one. Shape.

Problem two is temperature. When researchers measured microwaved wheat bags, they found 57 to 70 °C straight out of the oven. That's why you test it on your wrist. Ten minutes later, it's lukewarm. So you're never comfortable. Too hot, then not warm enough.

Problem three is the one that ends every evening: it won't stay put. Shift in your chair and it's on the floor.

The heat-pack aisle knows all this.

But here's the thing…

There's no money in fixing it.

Why?

Because a wheat bag costs A$15 and a box of patches sells every week. A wrap that lasts for years and never needs the microwave doesn't make anyone a repeat customer.

So the routine never changes:

Microwave → too hot → wait → lukewarm → floor → microwave → repeat until bedtime.

We kept the ritual. We never questioned the tool.

WRAP. HOLD. STAY PUT. THE THREE THINGS A WHEAT BAG CAN'T DO

The 20-minute evening habit with the Thermaya° Knee

Remember my mum, picking the bag up off the floor?

Three weeks after I worked this out, she was sitting through the whole news without getting up once.

No microwave. No patches. No fiddling.

Just 20 minutes an evening of something so simple, I'm embarrassed it took me this long to see it.

Here's the secret:

To keep a knee properly warm, you need to do THREE things at the same time:

WRAP — Warm the front, the sides and the back of the knee, not just the top

HOLD — Keep the temperature steady at a level you choose, instead of scorching then cold

STAY PUT — Keep it strapped on while you shift in your chair or get up for the kettle, with no cord and no microwave

Miss even ONE of these, and you're back to managing a bag of wheat.

That's why the wheat bag doesn't work. (No wrap, no hold)

That's why patches don't work. (Single use, and they peel off)

That's why the heated throw doesn't work. (Warm on top, and only while you sit still)

You need all three. At the same time. Every evening.

A Wrap & Hold design.

And that's exactly what I went looking for.

THE EVENING IT WENT ROUND THE STREET

Two neighbours on a verandah, each wearing a Thermaya° Knee

After Mum's first warm week, word got around.

Her neighbour Ron, 74, retired plumber, tough as old boots, knocked on her door one evening.

"Whatever that thing is… I want one."

This man had been putting a hot-water bottle on his knee every night for two winters.

Twenty minutes with the sample wrap.

He didn't say much. He just didn't get up.

"It's still warm," he said, twenty minutes in. Like it was a trick.

Within a fortnight, three more people on the street had asked to try it.

A retired teacher who kneels in the garden every morning… A grandmother who'd stopped getting down on the floor with the little ones… A bloke who does the Bendigo frost walk with his dog…

Every one of them said the same three things.

Warm all the way round. Stays warm. Stays put.

Not "better than nothing". Not "nice while it lasts".

ACTUALLY WARM. ALL EVENING.

That's when I decided to do this properly.

Since then, Thermaya° has put it in front of about 3,000 people at in-person sessions and asked each of them to score it on price, effectiveness, comfort and quality.

The average, on all four: 4.8 out of 5.

That's when I agreed to put my name to it.

[DATO REAL] Historia de origen: ajústala a lo que pasó de verdad con la muestra física (nombres, ciudad, nº de personas que la probaron).

DO THE MATHS ON YOUR LAST WINTER

The heat-pack aisle versus one Thermaya° Knee

Pull up your last winter.

I want you to do the maths on what YOU'VE already spent. Not what "Australians spend on heat products". What it has cost you.

The heat-patch route:

About A$3 to A$4 per patch

Single use, peels off when you bend your knee

Three a week through winter

Total: around A$150 to A$180 a winter (and none of them come back)

The wheat-bag route:

A$10 to A$30 a bag

Two or three trips to the microwave a night

A new one every couple of winters when it starts to smell

Total: cheap, if you don't count your evenings

The cheap-wrap route:

A$60 to A$120 online

Warm for a few weeks

Stops heating right after the return window

Total: a drawer full of gadgets

The aisle LOVES these options.

Know why?

Because you keep coming back.

Every winter, every week, every night.

What they don't love is a wrap you charge like your phone, that holds its warmth and lasts for years.

THE WRAP MY MUM SWAPPED HER WHEAT BAG FOR

Introducing the Thermaya° Knee: warmth all the way around

It's called the Thermaya° Knee.

And it's the wrap Thermaya° designed, with my notes on the desk, to do all three things a wheat bag can't:

A WRAP-AROUND FIT that curves around the front, sides and back of the knee and straps on, so the warmth stays where you want it.

STEADY, ADJUSTABLE HEAT with 5 levels on a touch panel. Choose one and it holds it. No scorching start, no lukewarm finish.

CORDLESS FREEDOM from a built-in 3000 mAh battery, charged by USB-C, with a gentle vibration at 3 strengths if you want it. All three. Together. Every night.

It weighs about 270 g, it's made of soft woven fabric, and it fits your shoulder or elbow too when they need a turn.

You literally sit down, strap it on, press one button, and let it do the work.

No microwave. No patches. No guesswork.

Just your knee finally getting what it's been asking for all winter:

WARMTH. ALL THE WAY ROUND. ALL EVENING.

HERE'S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS IN 20 MINUTES

What happens in 20 minutes with the Thermaya° Knee

When you strap on the Thermaya° Knee, here's what happens:

0–5 Minutes: The Warm-Up

The heating panels come up to the level you've chosen. Because the fabric curves around the knee, you feel the warmth at the front, the sides and the back at the same time. Most people say the same thing in the first two minutes: "Oh. It's all the way round."

5–15 Minutes: The Steady Part

This is where the wheat bag would be going cold. The Thermaya° Knee just… holds. Level 1 is gentle, level 5 is toasty, and whichever you pick stays there. You stop thinking about it and watch the telly.

15–20 Minutes: The Wind-Down

Switch it off, undo the straps and enjoy the comfort. The whole knee feels warm and relaxed, not just the patch where the bag was sitting.

This is the part every other "solution" misses. It never gets this far.

After 20 minutes?

You get up out of the chair feeling warm and comfortable.

Not "warm for ten minutes" like a wheat bag. Not "sticky and peeling" like a patch.

Actually. Warm.

3,000 PEOPLE SCORED IT 4.8 OUT OF 5. HERE'S WHAT TESTERS TOLD US

Reviewing tester feedback on Thermaya° Knee samples

Before launch, we sent Thermaya° Knee wraps to Australians who already use a wheat bag or hot-water bottle every night.

The feedback?

Nearly all of them told us it stayed warmer than the wheat bag.

Most said it stayed put when they moved.

And almost everyone kept using it every evening.

But my favourite comment?

"I forgot the microwave existed."

Here's what they said in their own words:

[DATO REAL] Sustituye estos testimonios de EJEMPLO por citas reales de los testers (con permiso). No publiques porcentajes hasta tenerlos.
Margaret S. — Ballarat, VICEXAMPLE

“I thought it'd be a wheat bag with a battery. It isn't. It goes all the way round and it's still warm at the end of the news. I haven't opened the microwave in a fortnight.”

Ron T. — Toowoomba, QLDEXAMPLE

“I'm hopeless with gadgets. Charge it, strap on, press the button. Done. My granddaughter didn't have to show me a thing.”

Helen D. — Hobart, TASEXAMPLE

“Warm, not scorching. Level 2 is plenty most nights and level 5 when it's freezing. None of that too-hot first minute my old bag had. I'd love a slightly longer cable.”

Pat W. — Bendigo, VICEXAMPLE

“First night I nearly gave up, I had it on level 5 and it was too much for me. Went down to level 2 the next night and that was it. Sleeves always slide down on my skinny knees; this one doesn't budge. To anyone who finds it too warm at first: turn it down, don't send it back.”

THE AUNT WHO SAID “LATER”

A rainy winter evening indoors with the Thermaya° Knee

Everything I've told you only matters if you actually change the tool.

I know that sounds obvious. But most people don't.

Let me tell you about my aunt Diane.

67 years old. Retired primary teacher. Two grandchildren she adores. Same knees as Mum. Same cupboard with the same wheat bag in it.

When Mum told her about the wrap, she said what everyone says: "I'll get one later. The bag's fine."

That was last May.

She spent the whole winter doing the microwave dance. Three trips a night. The floor, the wrist test, the lukewarm ten minutes.

When I saw her at Christmas, she said, in a voice so quiet I almost missed it: "Why didn't I just get one?"

I didn't have an answer.

Because nothing bad happened to Diane. She just had a whole winter of evenings that were less comfortable than they needed to be.

Mum sat through every episode of her show. Diane got up three times a night.

Same knees. Same winter. One tool.

Whatever your wheat bag did in that ten-minute test at the top of this page, that's your evening, every evening, until you change it.

Winter doesn't wait. And there's no reason you should either.

[DATO REAL] Historia de Diane: usar solo si es real o marcarla como ejemplo ilustrativo.

A$89.95 ONCE, OR A$150 EVERY WINTER?

One winter of patches versus one Thermaya° Knee

Do the maths on the options one more time.

Heat patches:

Around A$3 to A$4 each

Three a week through winter

Total: about A$150 to A$180 a winter, every winter

A cheap wrap:

A$60 to A$120

Warm for a few weeks, then nothing

Total: another gadget in the drawer

A physio-style heat session:

A$80 to A$120 a visit

Total: more than the wrap, every single time

The aisle loves these options.

Know why?

Because you keep coming back.

But here's what makes them nervous…

A wrap you buy once and wear every evening is the last thing a repeat-purchase aisle wants.

But I didn't put my name to this to get rich off my mum's neighbours.

I did it because I watched her pick a cold bag up off the floor for years.

Because Ron was on his second winter with a hot-water bottle.

Because Diane said "later" and lost a whole winter of comfortable evenings.

So here's the deal:

The Thermaya° Knee is A$89.95.

Once. No subscription. No crossed-out fake prices.

That's less than one winter of heat patches, for a wrap that's ready every evening for years.

THE LAUNCH OFFER: 3 FREE GIFTS WITH EVERY WRAP

Every wrap ships with 3 free gifts

Because this is our launch, every order comes with three things I wanted Mum to have from day one:

The Warm Knee Evening Guide (PDF) – the 20-minute routine, which level to start on and how to use warmth safely.

The 30-Night Warm Knee Tracker (printable) – tick off your evenings and notice the difference by the end of the month.

A 12-Month Replacement Warranty – because "it died right after the return window" is the number one complaint about every gadget in this category. If it stops working in the first year, we replace it.

Plus free tracked shipping anywhere in Australia.

Why would I do this?

Because every person who stops doing the microwave dance tells someone else. And that's how a small Australian brand grows.

BUT HERE'S THE HONEST PART

We're a small brand and this is our first run.

Not a fake countdown. Not "only 12 left".

Just this: orders ship from our fulfilment partner with tracking, and delivery takes around 9 to 15 days. We tell you that upfront so there are no surprises.

And the launch gifts are for this first run. When it's gone, the next run may not include them.

The only place you can get the Thermaya° Knee is our official Thermaya° website. It's not on Amazon or eBay.

And here's the thing…

Every evening you wait is another evening you're:

● Doing the microwave dance

● Sitting very, very still so the bag doesn't slide

● Getting up stiff and cold when the news ends

While the fix is sitting right here for less than a winter of patches.

[DATO REAL] Confirmar plazos de envío reales y si la primera tanda incluye los 3 regalos de forma indefinida.

MY "7-NIGHT SWAP" DARE (YOU HAVE 90 NIGHTS TO DECIDE)

90-night home trial: love it or your money back

Look, I get it.

You've been burned before.

Spent money on "clever" gadgets that turned out to be expensive paperweights.

So here's my promise:

Take the 7-Night Swap.

Put your wheat bag in the cupboard for seven nights and use the Thermaya° Knee instead. Every evening. On your knee, your shoulder, your elbow if you like.

You have 90 nights to decide.

Feel it wrap… Feel it hold… Feel the difference at the end of the news…

And if you don't catch yourself one evening thinking "I forgot the microwave existed"…

I'll refund every cent.

No forms. No "store credit" nonsense. No questions asked.

Just email us and say "it didn't beat the wheat bag."

And on top of that, a 12-month replacement warranty, so "it died after the return window" never happens to you.

Why am I so confident?

Because I've watched what happens when someone with cold knees sits down with this wrap for the first time.

They don't get up.

TWO PATHS FROM TONIGHT

Two paths: another winter of cold wheat bags, or warm evenings with the Thermaya° Knee

Right now, you're at a crossroads.

Path #1: Keep Doing What You're Doing

Keep microwaving a bag that starts too hot and goes cold in ten minutes. Keep buying patches that peel off. Keep sitting very still so it doesn't slide. Keep getting up stiff and cold when the news ends.

Keep being a repeat customer for the heat-pack aisle.

And keep saying "later", like Diane did.

Path #2: Try Something That Actually Works

Spend less than one winter of patches. Get a wrap that goes all the way round, holds its warmth and is ready every evening. Fix the WAY the warmth gets there instead of reheating the same bag.

Sit through the whole news, warm.

Join the people who forgot the microwave existed.

Seven nights. That's all I'm asking.

The choice seems pretty obvious to me.

HERE'S EXACTLY WHAT TO DO NEXT

Click the big button below that says "CHECK AVAILABILITY NOW"

  • Choose your pack (Pro tip: Get two. One for each knee, or one for someone who still uses a wheat bag. You save more)
  • Fill out your shipping info (we dispatch within 1 to 3 business days)
  • Wait 9 to 15 days for your wrap to arrive, tracked all the way
  • Strap it on the first evening it arrives, on level 1
  • Email us your "I forgot the microwave existed" moment (seriously, we read every one)

But whatever you do, don't close this page thinking "I'll order later."

Later is another cold bag on the floor.

Later is another evening sitting very, very still.

Later is the launch gifts being gone.

Your knees have waited long enough.

Click below and let's make this winter a warm one.

With warmth,

Dr. Harrison Vance

P.S. — Remember the bag sliding onto the floor at the weather? That doesn't happen when warmth is strapped on. Mum sat through the whole bulletin last night. That could be you next week. But only if you order.

P.P.S. — The Thermaya° Knee comes with a 90-night home trial, a 12-month replacement warranty and no subscription. (Yes, we did it the honest way.)

P.P.P.S. — Seriously, this is our first run and the launch gifts go with it. If the button below still works, you're in time.
